Research Group
PI: Prof. Alan Ryder
Brief Biography:
Professor Alan G. Ryder has a B.Sc.(1.1) in Chemistry (1989) and Ph.D. in Inorganic chemistry (1994) both from the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). After a stint as a postdoctoral researcher (organometallic synthesis) in UCC, Cork. He re-joined NUIG as a postdoctoral researcher in the National Centre for Laser Applications (located in the School of Physics) in 1997 to work on developing quantitative Raman spectroscopy-based methods for measuring illicit narcotics.
From 2006 to 2022 he has was based in the School of Chemistry at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) and lectures mostly in spectroscopy and analytical methods/instrumentation. In 2003 he formed the Nanoscale Biophotonics Laboratory (NBL) a research group focused on the use of photonics and chemometrics technologies for life and physical science applications. In the Analytical Sciences, the primary emphasis is developing rapid, quantitative analytical methods for the analysis of complex materials with particular focus on biopharmaceutical manufacturing and he has collaborated with a range of global biopharmaceutical manufacturers on a variety of analytical research projects. Since 01/04/2022 he has rejoined Physics as part of the School of Natural Sciences.
He has authored >100 publications and generated 3 patents (2 licensed to an NUIG spin out company, Analyze-IQ).
To date he has secured >11 M€ of research funding (~3.3M€ from industrial sources) and graduated 22 PhD & 5 MSc. research students.
