What we do

Buildings & Estates procure and manage energy supplies for the University.  As part of Buildings & Estates, the Energy Office is responsible for the following aspects of energy management for the estate:

  • Procuring the University's electricity, gas, biomass oil and water supplies
  • Validating and authorising energy invoices
  • Carrying out energy surveys and audits, identifying energy waste and making recommendations to reduce this
  • Raising levels of energy awareness amongst staff and students through the The Community and University Sustainability Project (CUSP) programme and Green Campus

Additionally, we provide consumption and cost information for management reporting purposes, support colleagues on energy conservation issues, liaise with external organisations on energy best practice and assess new energy saving technologies.

EPI - Energy Performance Indicator

University of Galway measures energy performance in a variety of ways, eg by energy type, by consumption, by activity, by cost and by carbon footprint.

One internationally recognised performance metric that is used to compare and contrast the performance of different buildings is the EPI - Energy Performance Indicator measured in kWhrs/m²/year.

This allows organisations to compare and contrast energy performance in all buildings using a universal measurement tool, energy per square meter area per year.

ISO 50001

University of Galway achieved ISO 50001 status in 2012.  This means that University of Galway is operating an internationally recognised Energy Management System Standard within the university.  ISO 50001 is an international standard that enables organisations to establish the systems and processes necessary to improve energy performance, including energy efficiency, use and consumption.
