Biography

Dr Lucy-Ann Buckley is an Associate Professor in Commercial Law and the former Vice Dean for Teaching and Learning in the College of Business, Public Policy and Law.

Dr Buckley specialises in equality law, labour law and family property. From 2018-2020, she acted as an expert advisor to the States of Guernsey in relation to the development of new multi-ground equality legislation. She was awarded an NUI Galway President's Team Award for Societal Impact for this work in 2020. She previously contributed to the Joint Statement Towards Inclusive Social Protection Systems Supporting the Full and Effective Participation of Persons With Disabilities adopted by the International Labour Organisation in 2019.

Dr Buckley previously held positions with the University of Warwick and the University of Limerick. She holds a BCL and LLM by research from University College Cork, a BCL (masters degree) from the University of Oxford, and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin. She is also a qualified solicitor.

Research Interests

Dr Buckley's research is strongly socio-legal and considers law in its broader social, political and organisational context. She is particularly interested in the social impact of legal rules and decision-making. Her work is informed and driven by a social justice perspective, particularly a concern for gender equity in the family and employment contexts, and more recently, for disability equality. An emerging interest, building on her social justice focus and educational leadership roles, relates to inclusive education, broadly defined.

Dr Buckley's publications can be classified under three broad headings: family property and the division of assets on divorce and separation; labour law, particularly employment equality; and commercial law, especially as it intersects with family law and labour law.

Dr Buckley has published in a range of leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Legal Studies, the Canadian Journal of Family Law, the Northern Ireland Legal Quarterly, the International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family, and the Industrial Law Journal. She has also published in leading national law journals, such as the Irish Jurist and the Dublin University Law Journal.

At NUI Galway, Dr Buckley is an affiliate of the Centre for Disability Law and Policy. She is joint leader of the Work, Organizations and Society cluster at the Whitaker Institute, and a member of the Gender and Public Policy cluster. She is also a member of the Berkeley Center on on Comparative Equality and Anti-Discrimination Law, where she is a member of the Sexual Harassment Working Group and the Disability Rights Working Group.

Dr Buckley has supervised a number of funded PhD students in areas related to disability equality, access to employment and labour law. She welcomes inquiries from potential doctoral students in relation to equality law and policy (including but not limited to gender and disability issues), labour law, and family law (particularly family property).

Dr Buckley is currently co-leading two research projects on inclusive learning at NUI Galway. One project, funded by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, focuses on postgraduate students. The other, funded by the NUI Galway Student Project Fund, focuses on undergraduate students.
