14h International Disability Law Summer School

‌‌11th International Disability Law Summer School 17-21 June 2019

The Centre for Disability Law and Policy at the University of Galway recently held its 14th International Disability Law Summer School in June.

The 14th International Disability Law Summer School focused on how to realise the human rights of disabled children and young people. It brought together key stakeholders involved in implementing and monitoring the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. It addressed a wide range of topics which impact on the rights of disabled children and young people including access to education, healthcare, community living and participation in public and political life. Particular attention was paid to urgent challenges facing disabled children and young people, including the climate and refugee crises.

Summer school considered the perspectives of disabled children and young people from different communities and cultures, including indigenous children and LGBTQI+ children to ensure the human rights of all disabled children are fully respected. Throughout the week attendees heard from young disabled activists and their allies, representatives from UN bodies, and those responsible for implementing the rights of disabled children and young people at national levels. Finally, summer school explored the strategies which can be used to achieve meaningful change, placing young disabled people at the centre of all decision-making processes for issues that affect their lives.

This year's summer school was delivered both online and in-person. Proceedings were highly interactive with plenty of time dedicated to questions and answers between attendees and speakers. The proceedings were recorded and are on the Centre’s YouTube site - click here to access.
