When the EDI Campus Committee was first formed in the 2016/17 academic year, one of the work streams highlighted was Cultural Diversity, both in terms of expanding diversity and supporting inclusion. The Cultural Diversity work stream focuses on the diversity of the University community in terms of race, ethnicity, culture, language, and religion. The diversity on campus is influenced not only by the diversity of the student and staff body (which is drawn from over 110 countries), but also that of Galway city and the broader catchment area. The work of cultural diversity spans the interface of national and international staff and students, the diversity within the Irish national population, and the University's engagement with ethnic-minority Irish citizens (including members of the Traveller community).

Ongoing Work

The focus of the work in this area has led the EDI Campus Committee to four key aims: development of systems to assist staff and students in navigating diversity at NUI Galway (e.g. intercultural communication training, inclusive teaching & learning, etc.); consultation with international staff to canvas experiences relating to diversity (e.g. surveys, development of staff networks); developing practices to address barriers faced by international staff (e.g.  increased induction information, the University's relationship with the GNIB), and promotion of cultural diversity as a leadership value-system of the University regarding decision-making and strategic development.

Progress toward these aims has been achieved with work ongoing.  There are currently pilot programmes of Cultural Communication and Intercultural sensitivity training; an initial networking exercise has taken place with international staff and a staff network is in development; the Human Resources Office are working with the GNIB and other stakeholders to discuss practices in relation to visas; and the EDI Campus Committee is keeping cultural diversity on the agenda for stategic and operational planning.

The Working Group are also teaming up with the Students' Union.  Both the International Students Officer and the Ethnic Minorities Officer are members of the Working Group.
