Nelson Mandela Anti-Racism Week 2023
On Friday, 20 June 2003, Nelson Mandela, Nobel Laureate and former President of South Africa was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws at the University. Over 1,200 attended the conferring ceremony in Áras na Mac Léinn and almost 3,000 well-wishers lined the route of the Academic Procession.
Under the auspices of the Office of the Vice-President for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, the inaugural University of Galway Nelson Mandela Anti-Racism Week will occur during the 20th – 24th March 2023 to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the conferring of an Honorary Doctorate of Laws to Nelson Mandela.
The week of events aims to empower our University community to act on Nelson Mandalas Anti-Racism vision and our values of respect, openness, excellence and sustainability through the advancement of race equality and anti-racism at the University of Galway.
Nelson Mandela Anti-Racism Week EDI Project Fund
To mark the inaugural Nelson Mandela Anti-Racism Week (20th – 24th March 2023), the Office of the Vice President for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (OVPEDI) annual Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Project Fund (€15,000) will be awarded as several small grants normally ranging from €300 - €1000. The fund is available to staff and students on a competitive basis for a variety of Anti-Racism projects within the University.
