Welcome to the Discipline of General Practice

We are a young (established 1997) and vibrant discipline which has quickly grown into the largest such discipline on the island of Ireland. We undertake nationally and internationally acclaimed teaching and research which we hope contributes to the care that you receive from your local general practitioner.

We teach in three of the five years of the medical undergraduate course. This includes placements for medical students in general practices along the western seaboard of Ireland, including islands and Irish speaking practices. Our teaching is consistently rated very highly.

Our research attracts significant national and European funding. We were the first, and to date the only, general practice discipline to be awarded the Royal Academy of Medicine in Ireland Award for Overall Best Research Paper (2011). Our research impacts on individual patient care, as well as regional and national policy.

We provide a highly supportive environment for postgraduates whether they are registered for a PhD or enrolled on one of our fully modularised distance learning courses in clinical primary care or clinical education. We welcome national and international students to join our postgraduate courses.
