PhD position at Discipline of Anaesthesia, University of Galway

Details: The Discipline of Anaesthesia at The University of Galway has a mixed team of basic, translational and clinical researchers interested in a wide variety of critical care related diseases and potential therapeutics. We have recently initiated a collaboration with Dr. Karen English at Maynooth University to investigate modified mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) as a possible intervention in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This project is funded by the Science Foundation Ireland Frontier for the Future program.

We are seeking a talented and motivated person to join our group as a PhD student in this project. This will be a four year structured PhD in Anaesthesia and fees plus standard SFI stipend will be funded. The student will primarily investigate preclinical ARDS models, with an emphasis of efficacy and biodistribution. Other aspects of the project involve collection and analysis of ICU and sepsis patient blood samples and looking at how these may influence MSC biochemistry in the disease state.
