Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time fixed term position as a Research Fellow in Electrode Design for High-voltage, High-frequency Electroporation Development in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the University of Galway. The position is available from 1st October 2023 until 31st October 2024, with the possibility of extension by some months.
This position is funded by the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund (DTIF) Programme under the ENACT project (ENdoscopic outpAtient Cancer Treatment platform). The ENACT consortium, led by Mirai Medical and comprising of Advanced Energy, University of Galway and Trinity College Dublin (TCD) will bring to market a novel platform that delivers electrical pulses to tumours, displacing traditional therapies, dramatically improving outcomes for cancer patients whilst addressing 10 of the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals (SDG’s) by 2030.
Existing electroporation generators designed for use in the treatment of cancer are large, expensive and have limited configurability for electrode designs. This project aims to address a gap in the market for an electroporation generator which can deliver high frequency reversible (RE) and irreversible (IRE) electroporation pulses for a wide range of electrode designs to accommodate different cancer indications. New electrode designs are needed to enable targeting of a range of tumour sizes and shapes, where the challenge is to provide uniform electric field coverage for high voltage, high frequency pulses. The response of the electrodes to different target materials will be investigated, as well as the design of cabling to provide a low impedance connection between the generator and electrodes.
The post-holder will lead the development of new electrode solutions to achieve required electric field distributions for effective electroporation of different tumour types. They will collaborate closely with industry partners on the industrial design, including design for manufacture and test, while ensuring adherence to relevant standards and regulations. They will also collaborate with clinical partners in supporting protocol development and pre-clinical testing. Finally, they will be involved in project management, communication and dissemination activities associated with the technical tasks.
The post-holder will be based in the Power Electronics Research Centre in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at University of Galway. The Power Electronics Research Centre is based in a 60 m² facility in the Alice Perry Engineering Building at NUI Galway. The aim of the Centre is to foster links with industry by transferring technology from a strong research base in the University to the wider community.
Job Description:
The successful candidate will lead the development of new electrode solutions to achieve required electric field patterns for delivering effective electroporation pulses to different tumour types. The post will include evaluating suitable new electrode sizes, shapes and materials based on detailed electric field simulations; design of cabling and connections; equivalent circuit modelling; prototype components design, build and bench test; and system level bench testing to produce basic functionality data for the new electroporation electrodes and generator system. They will collaborate closely with an industry partner on the generator industrial design, pre-certification of EMC/EMI (60601-1-2) and electrical safety (60601-1) to mitigate risk. They will also collaborate with clinical partners in supporting protocol development and pre-clinical testing. Finally, the post-holder will also take responsibility for project management, meeting appropriate milestones, timelines and deliverables, and for dissemination activities associated with the technical tasks. S/he will also support a team of postgraduate researchers working on a range of different projects in power electronics, with different technical requirements, and will be expected to contribute to the development of the host laboratory’s ongoing research programme.

Job Description:
The project is funded by Science Foundation Ireland and is a collaboration between ICHEC/University of Galway and TCD (lead). The successful candidate will work with the project team to develop a risk index for buildings in Ireland due to climate change impacts. The project will inform stakeholders of the spatial and temporal risk for building locations due to climate-related hazards, enabling targeted and specific adaptation measures to be determined for the built environment. This index will support building owners, local authorities, insurers, banks, as well as other key stakeholders in terms of climate change adaptation, helping to deliver Ireland’s goal of becoming climate resilient by 2050, as set out in the SFI 2050 Challenge. The project brings together two complimentary skillsets to achieve this, regional climate modelling (ICHEC) and building vulnerability assessment (TCD). The project will merge these skillsets by applying a quantitative risk-based framework to assess buildings in Ireland to a range of climate hazards.
The successful candidate will utilise the most up-to-date high-resolution (4km) regional climate projections for Ireland. These datasets were produced by downscaling CMIP5&6 data to provide climate projections for Ireland using regional climate models (RCMs) for the period 1976-2100. To address the issue of model uncertainty, a multi-model ensemble approach was employed, resulting in over 6000 years of simulated data. Through the ensemble approach, the uncertainty in the projections can be partly quantified, thus providing a measure of confidence in the projections. To quantify the uncertainty in the future emissions, the future climate is simulated under the CMIP5 RCP (RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5) and CMIP6 SSP (SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5) scenarios. The project team will also communicate closely with, and source standardised climate projection data from, the Met Éireann TRANSLATE project. The objectives of TRANSLATE are to develop standardised future climate projections for Ireland, and hence to develop a range of sector-specific climate services.
The project outputs will be of interest to a range of stakeholders, including local authorities, private homeowners, commercial property managers, investors, banks and insurance companies. As such, an important component of the project will be engagement with domain experts, policy makers and industry.

Detailed Project Description
This project (SAFEWASTE) will help support the use of animal waste, wastewater treatment sludge and other relevant wastes as organic fertilisers in agriculture by ensuring they are free of chemical and biological hazards, thereby protecting food safety and public health. The overall project is highly multidisciplinary and involves researchers from Teagasc, University of Galway, TU-Dublin and UCD. It will (1) deliver new data on the types, prevalence and concentrations of chemical and biological hazards in wastes intended for land spreading in Ireland (2) provide a novel risk-ranking approach to identify the waste-hazard combinations that should be prioritised to achieve maximum food safety/public health protection and validated methods to control these hazards (3) identify risk pathways, differences in policy and practice for controlling chemical hazards in wastewater treatment sludge, the effect of food processing on each hazard, the most appropriate land application method(s) to minimise the risk of food contamination and the impact of waste spreading on soil microbiota.
The PhD student recruited in this project will focus on the development, validation and application of methods for the analysis of veterinary drug and pesticide residues in various waste types to be spread on agricultural land. The student will be registered at the University of Galway and based in the Food Safety Department, at the Teagasc Food Research Centre in Dublin 15, Ireland. The analytical chemistry laboratories are based in the Food Safety Department at Ashtown, Dublin 15, Ireland. The group consists of approximately 15 scientists made up of PhD students, research scientists and technologists. The laboratory is internationally recognized as a centre of excellence for the analysis of chemical contaminants in food and environmental samples. The laboratory participated on several EU and nationally funded research projects. The laboratory also fulfils a role of an Irish National Reference Laboratory for a range of substances including veterinary drugs and pesticides. All of these tests are accredited to ISO17025 and are validated to a high standard. The residues group has six laboratories equipped with state of the art instrumentation including seven LC-MS/MS systems and one ICP-MS. The laboratory also has a range of other equipment such as HPLC and GC systems.
Working closely with other PhD students within the SAFEWASTE project, the candidate will: (1) Identify target residues for research, (2) Develop and validation LC-MS/MS methods, (3) conduct a survey of chemical hazards in various agricultural wastes intended for land spreading in Ireland (4) investigate the effectiveness of strategies to reduce or eliminate chemical hazards in waste materials intended for land spreading (5) develop a decision support tool to identify an optimal means in which organic waste materials may be applied safely to land and within the regulatory limits (6) investigate the difference between regulatory requirements and current practice in controlling metal(oids), disinfectants, general biocides and other relevant chemical hazards in agricultural wastewater treatment sludge and other relevant wastes.
