I have recently defended my PhD thesis at Insight Centre for Data Analytics, University of Galway.
Some of the highlights of my career as a PhD student at University of Galway are as follows;

1. Published papers in highly reputable conferences
2. NUIG support in applying for a patent as primary inventor
3. Secured Enterprise Ireland commercialization fund of ~ €170,000 as a sole PI applicant
4. Worked in Intel labs as consultant data scientist and was on interview panels as decision maker for senior posts
5. Have multiple open offers to apply for positions from companies such as Apple, Intel, Amazon, Deloitte, HP, Accenture etc.
6. In the process of spinning off a company in October 2016 in the area of advanced data analytics

These are all the results of my engagement with Insight from the past few years as a PhD student.

These have been possible due to the excellent research facilities, faculty and support at NUI Galway.
I especially want to thank Technology Transfer Office (TTO) at University of Galway for their support.

Janvi Shah - MSc in International Management

Janvi Shah

"My decision to come to Ireland and getting admission here has been a total game changer and is proving too fruitful. I pursued Masters (International Management) from 2014-2015. My course had won the Best Postgraduate Award in the year 2013 which was also one of the main reasons for me to apply for this course. I received a Postgraduate Merit scholarship which waived a substantial amount from my course fee. Throughout the application process as well as after getting an offer, I made a point of keeping in touch with the International Affairs Officers and my Programme Director. All the NUIG staff are very kind to help and answer all your queries to make your transition to Ireland very smooth.

My course was a good mix of Management subjects including Human Resource Management, Corporate Social Responsibility and Business Ethics, Irish Economics, International Finance to name a few. Through my course, I was lucky to visit Hong Kong for an International Business trip as part of my Thesis. I also participated in the International Ambassador Programme and eventually became the International Student Ambassador representing India here in Ireland.Galway is a beautiful and a safest city filled with young and vibrant community of people. "

— Janvi Shah, MSc (International Management)  2014-15, from Mumbai, India. Janvi is currently employed by Allied Irish Banks (AIB) as IT Business Analyst.

Alumni Janvi Shah’s Recommendations for International Students

"I would suggest to all the prospective students to research well about their course, employment options and  having discussion with the past students. If any doubt there is help available always through contacting the International Affairs Office regarding accommodation, post arrival checklist such as opening bank account, doing your visa/re-entry visa etc. which is reflected well on the University’s website. Past students such as me are also there to help you all at all stages.

One last thing I would suggest to all the students to attend the Workshops held by the Career Development Centre. I attended most of the workshops including writing CVs, Interview tips, company workshops, career events to name a few which helped me understand and gave an idea regarding how the Irish job market works and what they essentially look for in a candidate. Do participate in events, societies, Ambassador programme etc. but keeping a very good balance with your studies. "

Ameya C. Jagtap, Regenerative Medicine

Ameya C. Jagtap

"As a Medical Doctor training in internal medicine - I wanted to be involved in translational research. The MSc Regenerative Medicine program provided a perfect platform towards my aim of becoming a clinician-scientist. The Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) is an apex institution spearheading research in this novel and dynamic branch of medicine with the programme delivered by world leading clinicians and scientists. With its excellent medical and industry links, I see it as the ideal place to translate research into practical relevance (bench to bedside approach), which I believe should be the ultimate goal of science. With on campus avenues like the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials and the Business Incubation/Innovation Centre University of Galway provides excellent opportunities for the same. The Republic of Ireland also has a distinct advantage of being a pharmaceutical hub, leading the world in research and development of newer drugs and treatment modalities. Galway is a wonderful city to live in, known as the cultural heart of Ireland. With its thriving arts scene, many festivals and friendly people around, it is, as its said around here - ‘mighty craic’."

Ameya C. Jagtap was a recipient of the Government of Ireland Scholarship.

Sandeep Pande, PhD Student

"I chose to study at University of Galway because I found a good choice of interdisciplinary research topics and a perfect match between my research interests and my supervisor. There are also good funding opportunities and the option to collaborate with other universities and research centres in Ireland and Europe.

Since I’ve been here I have benefitted from flexible access to research  labs, in particular the state-of-the-art High Performance Computing (Supercomputer) facilities. My PhD programme also includes other courses aimed at developing my research skills.

Galway is a medium sized, comfortable town to live in with all the facilities of a big city. The Irish people are friendly, helping and easy going and Ireland is an English speaking country, so there have been no language problems for me during work or in day-to-day living."

Swarna Raman

"I consider it as a great opportunity to have graduated from University of Galway with a Master’s degree in Regenerative Medicine. The Government of Ireland (GOI) Scholarship awarded to Indian students at the Postgraduate level was a real boost to me. The reason I chose Regenerative Medicine was mainly due to the therapeutic potential of this field and also the vast opportunities provided to students aiming at a career in industry and research by the Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) at University of Galway. The structure and methodology of teaching at REMEDI, ensures that students can carry out any scientific work of complex nature, with great confidence. I feel elated to have benefited from this course by further securing an admission to pursue a structured PhD specialising in the field of Orthobiology in REMEDI, via the Hardiman Scholarship awarded by University of Galway. My work aims at finding strategies for modulating the inflammatory environment in an osteoarthritic joint using the anti-inflammatory cytokine, viral interleukin-10, as a potential gene therapeutic target. It is very exciting to do PhD in a scientifically motivating and student-friendly research facility. I feel proud to be a part of REMEDI and University of Galway."
