Admissions Process
Please carefully read the Guidelines provided by the International Affairs Office, in order to apply to the University of Galway, School of Medicine Erasmus Programme. The Erasmus Co-ordinator in your home institution, selects students to participate in Erasmus, and submits student nominations and associated application forms to the University of Galway International Affairs Office. The nomination of students is based on bilateral exchange agreements in place with partner institutions - we do not accept applications directly from students.

School of Medicine - Erasmus Traineeship Options
The type and duration of the Erasmus Exchange varies from one Full Year of Studies to one Academic Semester, according to the Erasmus Bi-lateral Exchanges Agreements in place between the School of Medicine, University of Galway and our Erasmus partners.
There are 2 options for students to participate in an ERASMUS Traineeship at the School of Medicine
Year 3, (Available to students from Montpellier, Charite, Bochum) |
Incoming Erasmus students are fully aligned and integrated to the Year 3, Semester 2 curriculum at the School of Medicine. Incoming Erasmus students join us on an Erasmus Traineeship, which means, you only complete Clinical Rotations, and scheduled Teaching as part of these Clinical Rotations. All Examinations are completed at the Home Institution, not in the University of Galway. Students are encouraged to be present in Galway for the start of the Semester (e.g. 2 January, 2024), however, sometimes this is not possible to due conflicting schedules at the Home Institution. In this situation, students are invited to start their Erasmus Exchange at the beginning of the next four week block, to enable full integration to the Programme. It is not possible to commence an Exchange mid-way through a five week block. Year 3, Semester 2 - Structure Visiting Erasmus Students follow the same schedule as University of Galway Medical Students. This is a 15 week Semester, with three clinical immersion blocks - Medicine,Surgery and Critical Care. Each clinical immersion block is five weeks in duration, split as follows;

We can consider applications from Uppsala Medical students eligible to undertake Clinical Rotations in the following Specialties *Neurology, *Psychiatry or *Ophthalmology, over an 8 or 12 week period. Students usually complete 2 x 4 week Clinical Rotations in two of the Specialties outlined above. * pending availablility on Clinical Teams. |
Year 5, (Available to students from Grenoble, only) |
Visiting Erasmus Students from the Universite Grenoble Alpes, join us in Semester 1 and integrate to Year 5 of our Undergraduate Programme. We can consider applications from students eligible to undertake Clinical Rotations in the following *Specialties, for a 4 or 8 week period. - Endocrinology * pending availablility on Clinical Teams. |

This Erasmus Exchange type includes completion of all components and corresponding assessments for Year 4, including clinical placements, teaching, assessments and examinations.
