NUIG Medical Student Wins Prestigious Award - Congratulations Patrick!

Patrick Canning a final year Medical Student here in NUI Galway was recently awarded  Best Economic Paper at the International Society for Vascular Surgery (ISVS) presentations at the Veith Symposium in New York City for his work on 'Elective AAA Repairs' under Mr. Wael Tawfick and Professor Sherif Sultan. Patrick was also the second author on the Best Clinical Paper and was the only undergraduate student taking part in the Sypmosium.

• James P Murray Memorial Gold Medal:  Miray Unal. Supervisor: Dr Dimitrios Adamis, Department of Psychiatry, Sligo Mental Health Services, Sligo. Project: "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Adults: Use of Eye‐Tracker Device to Detect Attention Deficits"
• Best Basic Science Oral Presentation: Emma Flaherty. Supervisor: Dr Michael Conall Dennedy, School of Medicine, NUIG.
  Project: "Investigating the Link Between Adrenal Cushing’s and ER‐Positive Breast Cancer"
• ‌Student Choice Award: Caoimhe Ward. Supervisor: Dr Mary Murphy, Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI®). Project: "A validation of a Potency  Assay for the Assessment of Adipose Derived Stromal Cells in the Modulation of Osteoarthritis"

‌‌Poster Presentation Winners

• Best Basic Science Poster: Roy Quek. Supervisor: Dr. Karen Doyle, Department of Physiology, School of Medicine, NUIG. Project: "Investigations for biomarkers of Haemorrhagic Transformation"
• Best Clinical Poster: Christopher Thong. Project: "Clinical Characteristics of Patients Referred to the Local Sleep Clinics for Evaluation of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea". Christopher undertook his project with supervison at the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Singapore. 

Atlantic Corridor Research Conference (ACRC)

 The 2016 Atlantic Corridor Research Conference (ACRC), was hosted by NUI Galway on 3rd November, 2016. The best UG research students from NUI Galway, University of Limerick Graduate Entry Medical School, and University College Cork came together to present their research projects.

ACRC Prize Winners

• Best Oral Presentation: Seán Whelan, UCC.  Project: Microbiome & morphology: adult germ‐free mice exhibit distinct hippocampal dendritic morphological changes"

• Best Poster Presentation:  Aisling McNamara, NUI Galway. Supervisor: Prof. Ivan Keogh, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, UCHG. Project: "Human Papilloma Virus‐Associated Head and Neck Cancer; A 21st Century Pandemic; Assessing Student Awareness and Knowledge"‌

Letterkenny Multidisciplinary Research Symposium 

25th November, 2016

The sixth Annual Research Symposium at Letterkenny University Hospital will take place on 25th November, 2016.  The day comprises of a series of international guest speakers and oral and poster research presentations, with prizes awarded for oral & poster presentations in the categories of Allied Professionals, Medical Doctors and Medical Students.

International guest speakers this year include:  

1. Professor Heber MacMahon, Professor of Thoracic Radiology, University of Chicago, USA, 
2.  Professor Risal Djohan, from the Department of plastic Surgery, Cleveland Clinic, USA 
3. Dr Paul Moran, Consultant Anaesthetist and trust lead for Medical Simulation at Maidstone and Tumbridge Wells, NHS Thrust, Kent , United Kingdom.
