Biography

Yinka Somorin is a Marie Curie Fellow at the National Centre for Laser Application based at the National University of Ireland (NUI), Galway under the SPARKLE Fellowship programme, co-funded by the Marie Sk¿odowska-Curie Actions (EU) and Science Foundation Ireland. His research is focussed on the deployment of emerging technologies to develop novel biomedical applications. Under the mentorship of Prof Gerard O¿Connor, Yinka¿s project will employ advanced manufacturing, laser technologies and tissue engineering to develop a scalable cardiac patch for cardiovascular disease management.

Prior to joining the NUIG, he was a Research Fellow at Queen¿s University Belfast, where he worked on developing a rapid molecular diagnostic assay for detecting urinary tract infections and antimicrobial resistance directly from urine, with industrial and clinical partners. Yinka obtained a BSc in Microbiology at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Nigeria and MSc in Food and Industrial Microbiology at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. He was funded under an EU FP7 project as a Visiting Researcher to Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Piacenza, Italy in 2010. Yinka secured a College of Science Fellowship at NUI Galway to for his PhD in Microbiology, which he completed in 2017. Subsequently, Yinka moved to the UK and worked as a Visiting Lecturer at University of Bedfordshire. After a brief stint as an R&D Scientist at Mast Diagnostics, he moved to Queen¿s University Belfast in 2018. Yinka has a passion for science communication and represented Microbiology Society on the All Party Group on STEM at the Northern Ireland Assembly in Stormont.
