Biography

Dr. Noel Harrison is a permanent lecturer in Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at University of Galway since January 2016. He has a significant track record in advanced computational mechanics, experimental testing, material characterization, composite manufacturing, additive manufacturing of metal, polymer and composite feedstocks, and microscopy, sensor technologies and industrial robotics. He has 20 years¿ experience in applied and fundamental research. Dr. Harrison is a Funded Investigator in the SFI research Centre I-Form, for advanced manufacturing and a principle investigator (and University of Galway representative) in the Irish Composite Centre IComp. He has established a research group in University of Galway - Advanced and Sustainable Manufacturing and Materials Engineering (www.asmme.ie). He is the lead supervisor for 3 PhD student, 3 Postdocs, 1 research assistant, 2 MSCA fellow, and co-supervisor for 3 PhD students. His research group focuses on understanding and advancing traditional and next generation manufacturing techniques for metals, polymers and composites. He is chair of the National Standards Authority NSAI/TC 049/SC 02 "Additive Manufacturing" Committee that is integrated with the ISO TC261 and ASTM F42 standards committees. He has established the Advanced Manufacturing Lab in the Alice Perry Engineering Building at University of Galway with a suite of AM, robotics and material processing equipment, where the experimental work in this project will be carried out. He is currently supervising several projects such as Additive manufacturing for Tooling applications (AM-Tool) in conjunction with Irish Composite Centre (IComp), Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT) and University College Dublin (UCD). He holds a number of patents for novel orthopedic devices and has won ¿1.1 M in applied research funding for technology development and device design up to TRL 8.
