Biography

Dr Thomas Barry holds a PhD in Molecular Biology and a Masters in Business Studies. Dr Barry is the research director of the Nucleic Acid Diagnostics Research Laboratory (NADRL) in Microbiology at NUI Galway, Ireland. Research interests are focused on initial concept, biodiscovery, design, development, optimisation, validation of nucleic acid diagnostics (NAD) technologies, (eg; in vitro amplification - qPCR, NASBA, RPA assays - and more recently nanopore genome sequencing approaches). These NAD technologies are currently been used for the detection and identification of microbial pathogens and contaminants associated with the clinical, environmental, food and pharmaceutical sectors.
Dr Barry has over 20 year’s research experience working with both academia and industry where innovation, translation and commercialisation of NADRL technologies has been achieved. Dr Barry has published >75 NAD related  publications and is the lead inventor of 10 NAD target granted patents for the detection and identification of microbes (bacterial and fungi) to the genus and species level. These NAD developments and technical advances have generated research funding for the NADRL through commercial product research and development, technology transfer and Intellectual Property (IP) licensing agreements to industry. The NADRL at NUI Galway has successfully licensed IP to four multinational and three SME organisations for use with rapid culture independent microbial NAD kits. This has resulted in the incorporation of IP into rapid culture independent microbial NAD kit and instrumentation products which are distributed and sold globally.
Dr Barry is a founder of BioProbe Diagnostics, a NUI Galway spin out company, established in 2017. BioProbe Diagnostics is focused on bringing to the market innovative culture independent microbial NAD kits for use in rapidly detecting pathogens and contaminants associated with the environment.

Research Interests

MICROBIAL NUCLEIC ACID DIAGNOSTICS DEVELOPMENT
In recent years significant technical advances and developments have been made in rapid culture independent Nucleic Acid Diagnostics (NAD) technologies (in vitro amplification and sequencing) for the simultaneous detection and identification of specific microorganisms.

Currently the NADRL has NAD research projects focusing on:
Human Infectious Disease Diagnostics Assays:
- Respiratory Tract Infections and associated antimicrobial resistance.
- Fungal Diagnostics
- Small RNAs of Fungi (Cryptococcus neoformans / Pneumocystis jirovecii)
- Tuberculosis Diagnostics
- Sepsis (H. influenzae, S. pneumoniae, N. meningitidis)

Human Health Related Environmental Diagnostics Assays:
- Legionella pneumophila, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Non tuberculosis Mycobacteria
- Legionella species genome sequencing analysis
- Nanopore sequencing of microbial communities from building water distribution systems

NADRL RESEARCH INNOVATION
Dr Barry is the lead inventor of the following granted patent microbial platform nucleic acid diagnostics infectious disease technologies:

Spacer Probe Technology
(ITS – Bacterial / Fungal) Patent Number: IE128789.

RiboSEQ
(tmRNA/ ssrA – Bacterial) Patent Number: PCT/IE/00/00066

MtSEQ
(Multiple targets - Tuberculosis) Patent Number:  PCT/IB2011/001719

NADRL RESEARCH TRANSLATION AND COMMERCIALISATION

These technologies have been licensed to 4 global multinational IVD companies. Collaborative R+D programmes have also been carried out with these licensees contributing toward technology transfer of NADRL technologies and allowing for translation of technologies. SME’s (1 Irish) with business in infectious disease diagnostics assays and diagnostics instrumentation systems have also licensed some of these technologies.
