Achieving Impact through Policy Relevant Research - A Dialogue
The Institute for Lifecourse & Society (ILAS) hosted a virtual seminar titled “Achieving Impact through Policy-Relevant Research – A Dialogue” on 21st March 2024, from 12:30pm to 2:00pm. This session was the second in ILAS’s Public Policy Innovation Series, exploring the creation, transfer, and utilisation of research that directly informs public policy.
Participants examined a series of concise case studies both successful and unsuccessful highlighting how academics sought to shape real-world policy. Senior policymakers then offered reflections based on their experience working with research in time-critical decision-making environments. The seminar built on a prior 2023 event on research impact and was developed in partnership with the university’s Office of Vice President for Research and Innovation.
Speakers included Prof. Colette Kelly, Professor of Health Promotion and joint lead investigator on the Health-Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study in Ireland, Dr. Nata Duvvury, a gender-focused development expert examining the economic effects of gender-based violence and serving as co-chair on the Lancet Commission’s working group, Mary Doyle, former senior civil servant with leadership roles in the Departments of the Taoiseach, Health, and Education and Skills, and Dr. Charlotte Silke, a researcher at the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre with extensive experience in youth social and emotional development research, Dr. Fergal Lynch also featured as a facilitator bridging research and policymaking.
