About Us
The Discipline of Psychiatry at the University of Galway is dedicated to advancing mental health through excellence in education, research, and clinical engagement. Our core purpose is to improve understanding, diagnosis, and treatment of mental illness while promoting wellbeing across the lifespan.
We contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, equipping students and trainees with the knowledge, skills, and compassion required for modern psychiatric practice. Our teaching is closely integrated with clinical services, ensuring real-world relevance and strong patient-centred learning.
Our research spans key areas such as mood disorders, psychosis, youth mental health, and psychiatry, with a focus on translating evidence into improved care and policy. Collaboration is central to our work, and we partner with healthcare providers, research centres, and international networks.
