Insurance Policy Covers
Property / Physical Assets
The University arranges insurance in respect of Accidental loss or unforeseen damage of Physical Assets owned or the responsibility of the University. The University insurance programme includes the following policies:
- Material Damage & Business Interruption
- Fine Art & Collectables
- Marine
- Engineering
- Computers.
The policy Excess under the Material Damage & Business Interruption policy is €5,000 each & every claim which the unit making the claim is responsible for. The university policy on acquisition and disposal of assets is QA315 and can be found here.

Legal Liability
The University of Galway arranges the following liability insurance policies in respect of its activities as an Educational Body:
- Employers' Liability
- Public Liability
- Products Liability
- Professional Indemnity

Motor
The University is required to arrange motor insurance cover for all University-owned vehicles in accordance with the Road Traffic Act.
All drivers must have a valid license to permit them to drive under the University Motor Insurance.

Travel
The University arranges Travel Insurance Cover for Staff, Postgraduates and others, resident in Ireland, who are traveling abroad on University business.
The country to which you are travelling should be researched beforehand and DFA guidance followed. All travel must be risk assessed in advance.
**The policy excludes all travel on student placements or Erasmus trips and it is the responsibility of the individual travelling to arrange separate cover**
Where am I covered?
Covered applies during the operative time outlined in the schedule, anywhere in the world, with the following exceptions which must be referred to the Insurance office in advance of booking travel:

Any other region or country where the Republic of Ireland Department of Foreign Affairs Office has advised against “all travel” or “all travel due to the threat of kidnap” prior to the commencement of the Trip |
Where individual letters are required for VISA applications, please send your request to insurance@universityofgalway.ie along with the following information:
- Insured Person’s Name as it appears on Passport.
- Passport Number
- Date of Birth
- Travel Start Date
- Travel End Date
- Purpose of Travel
Please note that all requests need to be submitted allowing an adequate timeframe to respond (typically 10 working days).
