Mature Students
Mature Students
Whether you are starting fresh, changing direction, or returning to study after time away, there are flexible ways to study at University of Galway as a mature student.
You do not need to follow the traditional route. Support is available to help you make the right decision and take the next step with confidence.
For full-time undergraduate degrees, you are considered a mature student if you are 23 years of age or older by 1 January in the year you plan to start. For example, for 2026 entry, you must have been born on or before 1 January 2004. If you are interested in part-time or flexible study, adult learners are typically 21 years of age or older.

Fees and scholarships

University of Galway Scholarships for Mature Entrants
No Application Required
University of Galway has encouraged and facilitated the admission of mature students to its programmes over many years. The University has approved a Mature Student Scholarship Scheme to support and facilitate the entry of mature students to its Fulltime Undergraduate Degree programmes. The University will award 30 such scholarships to mature students entering a full-time undergraduate degree programme. The Scholarship will be awarded for the first year of the degree programme.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the award of the Scholarship the student must:
- Be a mature student, who is at least 23 years of age on the 1st of January of the year of entry
- Have been offered a place on a fulltime undergraduate degree programme at the University and have accepted that offer in accordance with the relevant procedures of the University and the Central Applications Office
Basis of Awards
- Fifteen scholarships will be awarded in order of merit and will be allocated as follows:
- 3 scholarships to incoming matures to College of Arts programmes (based on exam results in semester one)
- 3 scholarships to incoming mature Nursing Students
- 3 scholarships to incoming matures based on Leaving Cert score above 400 points.
- 6 scholarships to incoming FETAC/QQI matures.
- Fifteen scholarships will be awarded in order of merit to students presenting University of Galway Access or Foundation Programme results obtained in the year of entry. These will be allocated evenly across the relevant programme offerings.
Value
The value of the Scholarship is €1,500 for the first year of the degree programme. Scholarship holders coming from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are encouraged to apply to the University’s Financial Aid Fund for funding for subsequent years.
Tenure
The Scholarship is tenable only at University of Galway in respect of the programme for which it is offered. It may not be transferred to any other programme. The Scholarship is only available in the year in which it is offered. It may not be deferred.
Condition of Award
To register as a student of the University on the programme in respect of which the Scholarship is being awarded by the due registration date. Failure to complete the registration requirement by the due date will render the student ineligible without further notice
If the holder withdraws from the programme for which she/he has registered or fails to continue throughout the session to meet the attendance and other requirements of the programme, she/he will forfeit the Scholarship and will be required to repay the whole or any part of the Scholarship as may be decided.

Financial Assistance Fund
Some students may experience financial difficulties during their studies. The Financial Assistance Fund is available to full-time students on courses of at least one year leading to an undergraduate qualification.
Applications are means-tested, taking your financial situation and family circumstances into account.
Application forms are usually available online from late September / early October.

1916 Bursary Fund
The 1916 Bursary is a financial award that supports students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds and groups underrepresented in higher education.
It is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (DFHERIS).
To be eligible, applicants must meet:

University of Sanctuary Scholarship
This scholarship supports International Protection applicants, refugees, vulnerable immigrant groups and Irish Travellers, who are underrepresented in higher education.
It is part of the University of Sanctuary Initiative, which aims to increase participation and create a more inclusive and equitable campus.
