Welcome to the Discipline of Medicine
The Discipline of Medicine includes over 30 academic faculty members and over 40 honorary academic faculty as well as a diverse community of clinical tutors, postdoctoral researchers, programme managers, technical officers and support staff. Members of the Discipline participate actively across all years of the NUI Galway Medical School curriculum, lead a growing range of taught and research Master’s programmes and typically provide mentorship and supervision to between 40 and 60 PhD and MD students at any given time. Many of the Discipline’s staff members participate directly in health service delivery through joint appointments with Saolta University Health Care Group. The Discipline aims to improve the lives of those with acute and chronic medical illness by:
- Performing cutting-edge basic science, clinical and epidemiological research that impacts on human health.
- Providing world-class undergraduate and postgraduate education in medicine and biomedical sciences.
- Enhancing the delivery of healthcare through practice innovation, entrepreneurship, policy development, community engagement and international partnership.
