Postgraduates

Postgraduate Students:
Fees are payable on registration.  However, if you choose the "pay later" option while registering online please familiarise yourself with the payment date deadlines:
The student levy of €140 is payable in full by 31/10/2023. 
The tuition element (if not covered by funding, i.e. SUSI, NUIG Scholarship, Company Funding) is payable in full by 31/10/2023 or can be paid in two equal instalments 50% by 31/10/2023 and 50% by 31/01/2024.
If you are eligible for a SUSI grant this may be worth €3,500 (F4 award) or up to a maximum of €6,270 (F5 award).  If you are awarded an F4 SUSI grant you will be liable for the balance as per the instalment dates. 

A late payment penalty of €200 will be applied to all unpaid student records after 31/10/2023.
A second late payment penalty of €200 will be applied to all unpaid student records after 31/01/2024.
Exam results will be held if student records have an outstanding fee balance.
Progression to the next year of study will be not be permitted.
Conferring will not take place.
Access to transcripts will be blocked.

Postgraduate students from Northern Ireland*, registering at University of Galway in 2023 will maintain the same rate of fees as EU students for the duration of their course.

 *Students who have been ordinarily resident in Northern Ireland for at least three of the five years preceding their entry to their third-level course and who meet the criteria of the scheme. Eligibility is determined at date of entry to the course.

All full time postgraduate programmes contain two elements (1) tuition; and (2) student levy.

The student levy (€140 in 2023/24) is payable by all students and is not covered by SUSI or any other funding body.  It must be paid in full on or before 31/10/2023.  

The levy is allocated to the following activities:  sports clubs, societies, Students Union, student health unit, Flirt FM, Áras na Mac Léinn and the Student Project Fund.

It is strongly recommend that you pay this levy on registration in September 2023.

All full time postgraduate programmes contain two elements (1) tuition; and (2) student levy.

The tuition fee is the payment made for a course of instruction at University of Galway.  However, if you have applied to SUSI for a grant and are deemed eligible you may receive an F4 or F5 award.  If you are awarded an F4 grant - Postgraduate Fee Contribution - SUSI will pay €4,500 towards your tuition (2023/24).  If you are awarded an F5 grant - Postgraduate Tuition Fees Only - SUSI will pay up to €6,270 towards your tuition.  So, for example, if your course fee is €6,400 (made up of €6,260 tuition and €140 student levy) SUSI will pay €6,260 on your behalf.  If your course fee is €9,000 (made up of €8,860 tuition and €140 student levy) SUSI will pay €6,270 on your behalf and you will be liable for the remainder of €2,730.

SUSI will not cover the student levy of €140.

EU and NON EU write up fees in 2023/24 are €2,140.  However, if you submit by the following dates you will be entitled to a partial refund of this fee. 

Submit by 31/10/23:  We retain €250 and refund €1,890 if €2,140 has been paid.  Submit by 30/11/23:  We retain €500 and refund €1,640 if €2,140 has been paid.  Submit by 20/12/23:  We retain €750 and refund €1,390 if €2,140 has been paid.  Submit by 31/01/23:  We retain €1,000 and refund €1,140 if €2,140 has been paid.   After 01/02/24 full writing up fees are due.

For SUSI grant holders only:
If SUSI agree to fund you for a repeat year, you will nevertheless be liable for the student levy (€140).  If tuition fees are granted, this applies only where a student is returning to the same college and the same programme.

For the student levy - (€140 in 2023/24):
This is payable for each year you are registered.

For non grant holders?
The EU repeat fee is €2,140; NON EU repeat fee is €5,090.  This is payable in full on registration or in two equal instalments.  50% on registration, or by 31/10/2023 and 50% by 31/01/2024.

If you have overpaid your fees you should email fees@universityofgalway.ie and quote your student ID number.  If you are entitled to a refund we can organise one for you as follows:
If you paid by credit / debit card we will refund the card directly - this takes 3 to 5 working days to be credited back to the card. 
If you paid by bank giro we will issue a refund cheque to you - this takes up to 10 working days.

Fee implications are outlined below once you are officially withdrawn on our student record system for the 2023/24 academic year. 

*   Leave on or before 31/10/23:  No fee implication - you do not owe any fees.  Any fees you have paid will be refunded apart from your initial non refundable acceptance deposit.
*   Leave between 01/11/23 and 31/01/2024: You are liable for 100% student levy €140 and 50% tuition.
*   If you leave after 01/02/24:  You are liable for 100% student levy and 100% tuition.
