Tá scéim nua teanga seolta ag OÉ Gaillimh, a bhfuil mar chuspóir aige freastal níos fearr is níos leithne a dhéanamh ar phobal Gaeilge na hOllscoile. Seo í an tríú scéim teanga atá foilsithe ag an Ollscoil agus tá réimse leathan de spriocanna ann a chuirfidh go mór le beocht na teanga ar an gcampas.

Úsáidtear siombal G san Ollscoil chun seirbhísí Gaeilge a aithint agus a fhógairt, agus mar chuid den scéim nua déanfar tuilleadh poiblíochta ar an siombal seo timpeall an champais. Tá go leor de sheirbhísí agus foilseacháin na hOllscoile ar fáil go dátheangach cheana féin, agus déanfar an tairiscint seo a threisiú mar chuid den scéim teanga, go háirithe sa Leabharlann.

Tá neart tionscnamh agus scéimeanna nua luaite sa phlean chun úsáid na Gaeilge a mhéadú san Ollscoil. I measc na mbuaicphointí:

  • Déanfar Scéim Chónaitheach a sheoladh roimh dheireadh 2021 ionas go mbeidh lóistín ar fáil ag cainteoirí Gaeilge ar an gcampas in aon áras amháin.
  • Ceapfar Comhordaitheoir Straitéiseach do ghníomhaíochtaí feasachta na Gaeilge ar champas agus fearainn oibre eile de chuid na hOllscoile. Oibreoidh an duine seo ar phlean cuimsitheach d’imeachtaí cultúrtha agus sóisialta a eagrú trí Ghaeilge.
  • Tá struchtúr nua curtha i bhfeidhm chun suíomh gréasáin na hOllscoile a chur ar fáil i nGaeilge agus leanfar ar aghaidh leis an obair seo a chur i gcrích.
  • Déanfar Plean Institiúideach Teanga a réiteach a dhéanfaidh comhaireamh ar líon na gcainteoirí Gaeilge agus a leibhéil inniúlachta i measc fhoireann na hOllscoile.
  • Bunófar Coiste Stiúrtha a bheas freagrach as an bplean institiúideach a phleanáil agus a fhaomhadh.

NUI Galway has launched a new language scheme that aims to provide a better and broader service to the University’s Irish language community. This is the third language scheme published by the University and it has a range of objectives that will greatly add to the vibrancy of the language on campus. These goals will be achieved during the period 2018-2021.

The objectives laid out in the scheme are focused on making an ‘active offer’ of Irish language services to students and staff of the University, as well as the wider public. The G symbol is already used by the University to identify and promote Irish services, and this symbol will be more widely publicised as part of the new scheme. Many of the University’s services and publications are already provided bilingually and this offering will be strengthened, particularly in the Library.

There are many new initiatives as part of the new scheme to increase Irish language use in the University. Among the highlights are:

  • A Student Residency Scheme will be launched before 2021 to provide on-campus accommodation for Irish language speakers in one central residence.
  • A Strategic Coordinator will be appointed to lead on the provision of Irish language awareness campaigns on campus. This person will organise a comprehensive plan of Irish language cultural and social activities in the University.
  • The University website has been restructured to provide more Irish language content and this work will be enhanced as part of the scheme.
  • An Institutional Language Plan will be prepared and this will determine the number of Irish language speakers in the University, as well as the level of proficiency among our staff.
  • A Steering Committee will be responsible for planning and approving the institutional plan.
