Biography:


 

Dr. Josephine Boland is Senior Lecturer in Education in the School of Medicine, National University of Ireland Galway, specialising in curriculum and assessment in the particular context of medical education. She leads a Curriculum Mapping research and development project in the School. She serves as director of the Masters in Clinical Education, teaches on the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Education and leads an undergraduate module in Digital Literacy for Tomorrow’s Doctors.


Her research interests, activity and publications centre on three main themes (i)  civic and community engagement and (ii) teaching and learning in medical education and (iii) higher education policy and practice.

Her doctoral research focused on embedding civic engagement within the curriculum and latterly she has extended her scholarship and practice to include community engaged research. As a founding member of  CORA (Community Engaged Research in Action (a community of practitioners of community engaged researchers in NUI Galway) she has supported and undertaken collaborative research projects with community partners, using participatory research methods.

Drawing on her research and her professional experience she provides continuing professional development on (i) course design and assessment and (ii) embedding civic engagement within the higher education curriculum, 

Josephine is secretary of the Education Studies Association of Ireland (ESAI) and an active member of the Association of Medical Educators in Europe AMEE), the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE), the Irish Network of Community Engaged Research and Learning (INCERL) and Educational Developers in Ireland Network (EDIN).
