"Der Besuch der Alten Dame" (The Visit)
Enjoy some snap shots from this year's fabulous performance of "Der Besuch der Alten Dame" (The Visit) by Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Our Final Year German Arts students took to the stage under the directorship of DAAD lecturer Antonia Musolff and DAAD Language Assistant Nura Alwani as assistant director. This is the third year in a row that Antonia Musolff is directing the German Play as module owner of GR339 - German Theatre and this year's three-night show was another brilliant success firstly in showcasing the Final Year German students' talents of acting and performing through the medium of German at such a high standard, secondly in involving everyone into what a theatre production comprises from translation work for subtitling, to stage set and costume design, rehearsing German pronunciations attached to the emotional contents of their lines to deliver great acting scenes. German lecturer Vincent O'Connell shone in his role as police officer and so did German Studies Alumni and current DAAD Youth Ambassador Luke Butterfield in his performance as priest.
“Der Besuch der alten Dame” is a tragicomedy about a wealthy woman who returns to her impoverished hometown and offers the citizens a billion dollars in exchange for the murder of the man who betrayed her in their youth. Dürrenmatt uses the townspeople to critique how easily human empathy and ethics can be dismantled by the temptation of financial security.
