Stride Mentoring Programme Graphic3

Mentors Needed For New Sports Pilot

On behalf of the Sports and Recreation Department, we’re excited to invite you to be part of a new pilot mentoring programme to support the mental health and well-being of elite student athletes at University of Galway.

We aim to recruit 35 mentors to pair with our student athletes for the academic year 2025 / 2026, with each mentor providing approximately two hours of support per month.

As a valued alum with a passion for GAA and / or Rowing, your experience and insight could make a real difference in helping the next generation thrive on and off the field.

The programme, designed by Conor Whelan (Galway intercounty hurler and a doctoral researcher at Atlantic Technological University) pairs student athletes with alumni mentors who understand the unique balance of academic and sporting excellence.

This programme can facilitate both online and in-person mentoring, depending on your mentee match. Previous mentoring / voluntary experience is helpful but not essential as an introductory workshop will provide initial training and best practice.

  • Please register your expression of interest here.
  • Closing date for applications is Friday, 8th August 2025.

We also encourage you to share this opportunity with fellow alumni who may be equally passionate about GAA/rowing and eager to give back.

Thank you for continuing to support our university community and the future of our athletes.
