A legacy of over 175 years has led us here.

We are on a journey. Along the way, we have pioneered education and research, and we have strived to change the world for the better.

It is time to embrace change in ourselves. Our new name and identity are symbolic of how far we have come, what we have achieved and where we are going. That’s exactly what we have created in becoming Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, University of Galway.

Of course, this isn’t just about us - it’s about this place where we build community; where we educate and pioneer research; where we unleash innovation and where people thrive. Thank you for embracing this change with us as we embark on another exciting chapter.

“The university is proud of the role it has played in Galway's journey to become a global city. City and university have grown together, and our new name encapsulates that history and is a promise for the future."

- Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh
Uachtarán na hOllscoile | President University of Galway

Message from the President

These are exciting times for us at University of Galway. We have given this new chapter in our heritage both long and detailed consideration. We believe passionately in our new name, as it simply reflects who we are, our essence and our identity, and our place in Ireland and in the world.

"In discussions over the last year or so I have often remarked how we are in,  of and for our place. Our University has played a major part in the development of Galway , our region and more broadly, through the global recognition it enjoys today. Our new name and brand encapsulates that sense of growing together, building on our strong traditions to shape together our promise for the future, for the public good. "

- Professor Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh
President of Ollscoil na Gaillimhe, University of Galway
