Dr Nazife Kosukoğlu presented a paper titled “Possibilities and Impossibilities of Queering Ottoman Legal Studies” at the Queer Studies Symposium, held at the University of Galway on 4th of August 2026.
Her presentation explored the possibilities of queering Ottoman legal archives and reflected on findings from the BILQIS project. Dr Kosukoğlu discussed the discrepancy between the visibility of queer subjects and lives in literary sources and their relative absence in legal archives, drawing attention to the methodological importance of silences, absences and archival limits for historiography.
The paper contributes to BILQIS research on gender, law, authority and historical legal archives, while opening further questions about how marginalised lives can be traced, interpreted and understood across different types of sources.
