Established in 2016, the Centre for the Investigation of Transnational Encounters (CITE) is a specialized centre for research on transnational links and historical comparisons between different states, societies and regions, with a particular emphasis on the modern period.

The Centre’s primary objectives are the following:

  1. To promote and support research on transnational links and comparisons between past societies by historians and others, resulting in academic outputs in the form of peer-reviewed publications.
  2. To provide a forum for academic discussion on such themes, such as seminars and international conferences.
  3. To encourage public awareness of the importance of transnational links and historical comparisons between Ireland and other countries in the modern past.

The Centre has been responsible for organising several international conferences, resulting in the following outputs:

A selection of papers from a workshop held in April 2025 entitled ‘Religion on the Ethnic Frontier’, held in 2025, will result in a special journal issue.
