Changing Global Hypertension Guidelines and Practice through Behavioural Insights on Medication Use
Lead researcher: Professor Gerry Molloy
IRRP cycle: 2024
High blood pressure is one of the most treatable high-risk chronic health conditions, yet millions live with uncontrolled hypertension due to underuse of life-saving medication. Research led by Professor Gerry Molloy transformed how clinicians understand and support medication use, shaping international guidelines, enhancing practitioner training and empowering patients across multiple countries. This programme of work directly influenced hypertension guidelines in Canada and Europe, supported policy development in the US and changed healthcare practice through new education resources for GPs and patients. The research has helped embed medication adherence supports into routine care for this life-threatening condition
Transforming Assessment and Treatment of Cognitive Difficulties in Early Psychosis
Lead researcher: Professor Gary Donohoe
IRRP cycle: 2024
Cognitive difficulties are a major cause of disability in Schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders. Prof. Donohoe’s research has advanced our understanding of the genetic and environmental causesof these cognitive difficulties, and their consequences for the social and occupational function of affected individuals. In terms of impact, this work has resulted in (1) changes to the model of care for early psychosis, development and implementation of novel (2) assessments and (3) interventions within the National Early Intervention for Psychoses (EIP) Services (completed by >200 patients), (4) development of national clinical guidelines, and (5) implementation of a national certified clinical training program for psychosocial interventions (to date completed by 45 clinicians).
The Active* Consent Programme: Enabling Educational Settings to Engage with Sexual Consent Promotion and Sexual Violence Prevention
Lead Researcher: Professor Pádraig MacNeela
IRRP Cycle: 2024
52% of adult females and 28% of adult males in the Republic of Ireland have experienced sexual violence in their lifetime (Central Statistics Office, 2023). Guided by socio-ecological system change principles, the Active* Consent programme has used primary research and healthy relationships education resources to increase young people’s knowledge, attitudes, and skills, enable professional staff to provide consent education and support for sexual violence survivors in educational settings. This has been possible by an ambitious programme to shape national policy and societal discourse. Led by Professor Pádraig MacNeela, this programme has established a track record of achieving impact with young people, professionals, policy makers in the post-primary, Further Education, and Higher Education sectors.
