Civic Engagement Scholarship

Bel was congratulated by Prof. Caroline McGregor, Director of the Institute for Lifecourse and Society (ILAS), Dr. Ann O’Brien, Community Engagement Manager at the University of Galway, and Marc Mellotte, Head of Engagement. She was also warmly acknowledged by previous Civic Engagement Scholarship awardees Caitlin Curley and Peter O’Neil.

Following a highly competitive selection process, Bel Nabulele, a first-year Law and Human Rights student was awarded the Civic Engagement Scholarship. Bel was recognised for her outstanding commitment to civic engagement and youth advocacy. She is an experienced youth advocate with the Ombudsman for Children’s Office, serving on the Youth Advisory Panel, where she has played a key role in significant initiatives. These include the development of Voices of Tomorrow, a youth manifesto for government, contributions to policy submissions on Access to Justice, and most recently, representing young people at the European Parliament.

The University of Galway Civic Engagement Scholarship was the first such award across Irish Higher Education, cementing the University’s position as the centre for excellence in engaging students in societal change, social impact and building civic skills.

Directed at new-entry undergraduate students, the scholarship is valued at €1500 per academic year for the duration of their degree programme and is open to all prospective students of any discipline.

The aim of the scholarship is to contribute to building global citizenship skills in enabling student leaders to take on community action at Ireland’s leading campus for civic engagement.
