Welcome to the Confucius Institute of Chinese and Regenerative Medicine at the University of Galway

In February 2019 The University of Galway signed an agreement to establish a Confucius Institute for Chinese and Regenerative Medicine at the University. This agreement formalised ties with Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) and paved the way for collaborations to integrate Chinese and Regenerative Medicine in the search for new treatments for conditions of unmet clinical need.

While there are over 500 Confucius Institutes across the world, with 16 having a Chinese Medicine emphasis, the University of Galway/Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine partnership is the only one focusing on the interface between Chinese and Regenerative Medicine.

Message from Professor Tim O'Brien Director of the Confucius Institute

We welcome the unique nature of the Confucius Institute at NUI Galway, which has at its core a partnership with Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine which has enabled us to establish a Confucius Institute of Chinese and Regenerative Medicine at University of Galway. Our goal is to discover new therapeutic products from Chinese Medicine with regenerative capabilities through a robust research programme.

Chinese Medicine has a long history and the Galway Confucius Institute uniquely combines a research programme exploring the interface between Chinese Medicine and Regenerative Medicine. We share the hope that together our researchers and clinicians working in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Regenerative Medicine, incorporating stem cell therapy, gene therapy, biomaterials science and tissue engineering will develop innovative treatments to improve healthcare for all.
