Galway International Arts Festival
(16 - 29 July)
Galway International Arts Festival has been connecting audiences and artists for four decades. Founded in 1978, it has grown into an event with a major reputation where, in 2017 marked the Festival's 40th year of service to the community. Galway International Arts Festival is a not-for-profit organisation committed to providing cultural explorations. In 2017, the Festival had over 210,000 attendees at 200 performances, exhibitions and talks that took place in 33 venues over the course of two weeks in July.
NUI Galway are proud to be Education Partners for the 2018 Galway International Arts Festival. A number of wonderful events will be hosted on NUI Galway's campus during the festival. See below for event and booking information.

Festival First Thought Talks
(16 - 29 July)
Galway International Arts Festival's thought leadership platform, First Thought Talks showcases thought-provoking discussion on forward-thinking ideas and creative best practices.
Focused on creativity, it includes discussions with both Irish and international thought leaders from a range of arts and non-arts disciplines, and aims to significantly progress the position of culture and creativity in society and make it a central pillar of Irish life.

Museum at the Moon
(Until July 29th)
Museum at the Moon is a new touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram who is known worldwide for his large scale public artworks. Measuring seven metres in diameter, the moon features 120dpi detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface. At an approximate scale of 1:500,000, each centimetre of the internally lit spherical sculpture represents 5km of the moon’s surface. The installation is a fusion of lunar imagery, moonlight and surround sound composition created by BAFTA and Ivor Novello award winning composer Dan Jones.
The moon is on display in the new Human Biology Building in NUI Galway (indoors) for the duration of the Festival, until July 29, open daily from 11am-7pm.
CÚRAM's AFTERIMAGE Community Art-Science Exhibit
(Mon to Fri until July 27th)
By award winning art duo, Cleary Connolly (Anne Cleary and Denis Connolly), ‘AFTERIMAGE’, shows portraits of 19 people who live or work in the Westside of Galway, and reveals the remarkable diversity of contemporary Irish society. The exhibit consists of 19 portraits, each composed of a black and white accompanied by a colour negative mapping. Each portrait is set against a background of images drawn from science and research, which are highly aesthetic images that warrant a second look to decipher their content.
The exhibit is now installed in the NUI Galway's art gallery in the Quadrangle and is open to the public 12-4pm Monday to Friday until July 27th.

Nälka! The Great Finnish Famine – A 150th Anniversary Exhibition
(Mon to Fri until 31st August)
Two decades after Ireland's "Black '47" Finland suffered a famine that was described as "the last great famine in Western Europe." This exhibition describes the Finnish experience and invites comparisons with the Great Hunger. Curated by Dr. Andrew Newby of the Aarhus Institute for Advanced Studies, it is the product of years of research into the relatively unknown Finnish famine.
Nälka! The Great Finnish Famine Exhibition is on display in the Hardiman Building NUI Galway, Monday to Friday 8:30am-5:30pm until 31st August.
