Biography

My research journey so far has brought me from a pioneering study of nuns in nineteenth-century Ireland in 1987 to a  study of the letters and problems written into Woman's Life and Woman's Way, Woman's Own and Woman's Realm, in the 1950s and 60s, in 2016. Along the way I have published two other books, one on women's household work in twentieth-century Ireland, and a  textbook on Irish social history,  and several articles/chapters/encyclopaedia entries on topics including dress and fashion, the cookery writer and novelist Maura Laverty (1907-1966), Irish nationalism, women in the Great War, emigration, the history of breastfeeding and many more. All of this research informs, and is refreshed by, my teaching on modern European and Irish social and economic history, including the history of poverty and crime, the history of women, modern Irish political and social history, and methodological courses which explore the use of popular print media and of oral history, as historical sources.  I am currently working on a history of shop assistants and secretaries in the twentieth century, while also indulging a lifelong enthusiasm for popular novelists and journalists in the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Research Interests

Summary under the following rubric; more detailed here. I am increasingly interested in the history of the silent and silenced majority, the people overlooked by historians or dismissed as 'ordinary'.  My current research project is a study of shop assistants and secretaries in independent Ireland between 1922 and 1973, and I hope, through looking at these workers, to gain an understanding of everyday, undramatic, non-traumatic life as it was lived in these decades.  A separate research project is the resurrection of popular fiction from these decades, especially that produced in Ireland by now-defunct publishers like the Talbot Press, and fiction published in Britain by Irish writers too  - Longman & Green, Heinemann and others.  I am slowly coming to the conclusion that modern historians and English literature scholars often miss the point of writers like Kate O'Brien and Elizabeth Bowen by seeing them as unusual for their time, or as curiosities, when they were just (in these particular cases) two of many Irish female writers in print and in demand at that time.
