Biography

Dr. Waqar Shahid Qureshi has 20 years of research and development experience in both industry and academia, encompassing various domains of computer science and engineering. Alongside his research endeavours, he has also been actively involved in teaching, sharing his knowledge and expertise in object-oriented programming, data structures, image processing, computer architecture and computer vision with students. Throughout his career, he has focused on applying artificial intelligence (AI) to develop practical solutions and technologies that promote sustainability across various fields. A notable achievement of his has been securing research funding from esteemed organizations such as the National Challenge Fund Research Grant from Science Foundation Ireland as a Co-PI, Marie Curie Post Doctoral Research Fellowship from Enterprise Ireland as a PI, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council Pakistan as a PI, and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan as a PI and Co-PI for various projects. His research and development projects enabled collaboration with diverse researchers in Thailand, Australia, Russia, Czechia, France, Japan, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, and China.

Before joining the School of Computer Science, University of Galway, he was serving as a Lecturer in Robotics and Automation at the Atlantic Technological University. Earlier, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the School of Computer Science, Technological University, Dublin where he developed an AI-based automated image analysis software tool for pavement surface condition index for regional and local roads.

He was also the Co-founder of a NUST spinoff company that provides agricultural spraying drone and crop health analysis services to local farmers. His notable research includes developing AI-based deep learning architectures for accurately detecting weed infestations in crops using aerial imagery. Additionally, his team has devised direct classification techniques for assessing the maturity of mangoes, melons, and oranges using non-destructive short-wave near-infrared spectroscopy.

He worked as an independent software consultant at XYZPrinting Inc. Thailand, where he along with his team developed products based on colour and depth cameras. He worked on three commercial products XYZPrinting Full-Colour Handheld scanner, XYZPhoto3D, and XYZPrinting Colour Scanner for Da Vinci Colour printer, which was the world's first FFF colour 3D printer and scanner. He is a co-inventor in the patents filed in the US and EU on a better 3D Scanning method for built-in 3D colour scanners, which were granted in Dec 2019. With 27 journal publications and 14 conference proceedings since 2014, he has built a strong publication track record. He has had the privilege of supervising and mentoring numerous students. To date, he has supervised ten master's theses, and twelve final-year projects, and co-supervised two Ph.D. students, guiding them in their research and academic pursuits. Currently, he is Co-leading the Pave Analytics Project, funded by the SFI  National Challenge Fund.


Research Interests

My research interest lies in the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to create effective solutions and technologies utilizing affordable sensing systems for real-world environmental monitoring, and various visual analyses in the areas of precision agriculture, horticulture, and civil engineering. 

My expertise encompasses 3D computer vision, automated image analysis, and automated analysis of NIR spectral analysis using point spectroscopy or satellite imagery.

Additionally, my proficiency extends to robot localization and target tracking. A specific focus of my interest lies in aerial robotics, with a particular emphasis on low-altitude flying. I am intrigued by challenges related to localization and mapping in this context, aiming to advance the field and address real-world applications.
