Dr Catherine Emerson

BA, MSt, PhD

Biography

I studied French and History at Trinity College Oxford, where I got my BA and my Master of Studies. I then went to Hull where I studied for a PhD and started teaching as a Graduate Research Assistant in the French Department and the Centre for Medieval Studies.

My research interests are in mémoires, life writing, canon formation and identities. I am particularly interested in expressions of identity in the Burgundian Netherlands and in modern Belgium and I am the author Regarding Manneken Pis: Culture, Celebration and Conflict in Brussels. I am working on a study of the role of sixteenth-century translator and editor, Denis Sauvage and his role in canon formation. I am also a member of the international research group studying Charlemagne as a European Icon.

I am currently head of second year and year abroad co-ordinator in the BA programme in French. I teach French language in second year and French literature in all years of the BA programme. I especially enjoy teaching medieval literature, language and culture.

Research Interests

My research is primarily in the late medieval period: my doctorate was a study of the Mémoires of Olivier de la Marche (ca. 1426-1502) and the culture of the Burgundian Netherlands. I am also interested in manuscript and print culture, in the relationship between history and literature and in the civic and regional societies of Belgium. I have published a study of Manneken-Pis, a urinating fountain in Brussels, and its cultural significance. I am currently working on two projects:an examination of one sixteenth-century editor of medieval texts, Denis Sauvage, and his impact on the canon and a study of late medieval representations of Charlemagne.

Teaching Interests

I teach both language and literature in French and particularly enjoy teaching medieval French, which allows me to teach both aspects simultaneously. I teach medieval literature iin the original language to final year and masters students. I also teach literature from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in undergraduate courses, and contemporary literature and music in Masters courses. I am particularly interested in appropriation and reappropriation of literary texts in different historical periods and by different genres and have designed a second-year team-taught course examining the way that canonic texts have been adapted for cinema.
