Biography

I am a senior lecturer in midwifery at the School of Nursing and Midwifery and currently the Head of Discipline, Midwifery. I have practised midwifery in London, Australia and Ireland in rural and urban settings, within obstetric-led and midwife-led models of maternity care. From December 2011 – August 2013,  I practiced as a Self Employed Community Midwife (SECM) & supported other SECMs providing care to women during pregnancy and childbirth at home.

I have an in-depth knowledge of midwifery education and vast experience in facilitating learning across midwifery, nursing and other health care professional programmes (undergraduate & postgraduate) and liaising with colleagues in midwifery practice to support learning in the maternity care environment. I supervise and examine students for academic achievement at undergraduate, masters and doctorate level.

I am a qualitative researcher. I lead and collaborate on research in pregnancy, childbirth and maternity care and methodological research using qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) and the application of qualitative methodologies to inform trials, trial methodology and core outcome set development. While I specialise in qualitative research, I also have expertise in quantitative systematic reviews of maternity care interventions.

I am Co-Lead of the QES Strand of Evidence Synthesis Ireland (ESI) and a Faculty Member of ESI and Cochrane Ireland, a Research Advisor with the Qualitative Research in Trials Centre (QUESTS), and a Research Associate with the HRB-Trials Methodology Research Network (HRB-TMRN).

Teaching Interests

I have an in-depth knowledge of midwifery education and vast experience of teaching midwifery and facilitating learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level across all midwifery programmes in the classroom, skills lab and clinical setting, using a variety of strategies. I participate/ have participated in the teaching of nursing students, neonatal nurses, public health nurses, medical students, obstetric and paediatric doctors, GPs, maternity care assistances, peer supporters and ambulance personnel. I I currently lead a number of modules at the school, am Year 4 Lead for the undergraduate midwifery programme and programme director of the undergraduate and advanced practice midwifery programmes in the School of Nursing & Midwifery.

I have a passion and enthusiasm for teaching all aspects of midwifery; however, I have a special interest in breastfeeding, postnatal care, intrapartum care, place of birth and research including qualitative research methodologies and methods.
