ILAS supported European Policy Seminar addresses Exclusion in Place

There is increasing recognition that places can play a significant role in determining the extent of social exclusion in the older adult life course. Bringing together international researchers and policy stakeholders, the second seminar of the ROSEnet European Policy Seminar Series addressed the many ways in which place can intensify susceptibility to old-age exclusion and/or help to protect and buffer against exclusionary processes. Hosted by Masaryk University (Brno, Czech Republic) on September 8th, and drawing in current policy debates on age-friendly initiatives, liveable communities and healthy cities, this seminar marked the first step in establishing a new policy dialogue on community and spatial aspects of exclusion across Europe. Involving an audience of more than 100 international researchers, policy stakeholders, and NGO and municipality representatives, the seminar include contributions from: Prof. Frank Oswald, Goethe University Frankfurt; Prof. Geoff Green, Sheffield Hallam University (and advisory to WHO European Division); Dr. Kieran Walsh (ILAS, NUI Galway); Prof. Sally Shortall, Centre for Rural Economy, Newcastle University; and Maciej Kucharczyk (Age Platform, Brussels, Belgium). This seminar was a part of the 4-year work programme of the ROSEnet (Reducing Old-Age Social Exclusion) COST Action, chaired by Dr. Kieran Walsh from ICSG and ILAS.
