Your Academic Award

In September 2022, our university was renamed and rebranded as “University of Galway”.

We are conscious that you began your journey with us when we were known as National University of Ireland  Galway, and more commonly NUI  Galway, or even NUIG. We also appreciate that not everyone is familiar with the intricacies of governance, policies and the regulations we must adhere to as a higher education institution.

With that in mind, we would like to explain an important aspect of your conferring.

The award you have received after several years of hard work and endeavour is being made to you in the name of “National University of Ireland  Galway”. For the time being, this title remains the legal name of our university, your university, as set down in legislation. As such we are required to continue to use when issuing academic awards.

Renaming and rebranding any organisation is a significant undertaking, and for a higher education institutions there are many added and often unseen complexities. There may come a time in the not too distant future when we are enabled to change our legal name, and thus the awarding body will change for diplomas, degrees, doctorates and so on.

Until then, all that remains is for us to thank you for choosing to study with us, and to commend you on your achievement. We hope you enjoy the Conferring. It is a momentous day and we hope you cherish your time with us, as we are now known, at University of Galway.
