Biography

Dr. Afrooz Maghzi is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Centre for Law, Religion and Society, University of Galway, where she contributes to the Faith-Inclusive and Culturally Competent Responses to Domestic, Sexual, and Gender-Based Violence (FATIHA) project.

Prior to joining the University of Galway, Afrooz's research focused on gender justice, human rights, and lawyering in authoritarian and legally plural systems. This work was conducted at research institutions including Trinity College Dublin, the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, CHREN and EZIRE at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, and Harvard Law School.  Alongside her academic work, she has worked with United Nations mechanisms, including OHCHR, as well as with international and regional human rights organisations, such as Front Line Defenders.

As a lawyer in Iran, she practised law and engaged in human rights advocacy, providing legal representation in political, gender-related, and family law cases. She worked closely with civil society organisations and campaigns, notably the One Million Signatures Campaign to repeal discriminatory laws against women.

She holds a PhD in Law from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in cooperation with the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, an LLM from University College Dublin, an LLM from Mazandaran University, and an LLB from the University of Tehran.
