Introduction from the President
A chairde, a chomhghleacaithe, a chomhpháirtithe,
I am pleased to introduce our strategic plan to 2030, which sets out our vision for University of Galway in the coming years. This plan is the outcome of extensive consultation with students, staff, partners and supporters. I want to thank my predecessor, Professor Peter McHugh, for leading the development of such an ambitious strategy for our university community.
Although the contributions were many and diverse, this strategy presents a clear collective vision of what our university can achieve together.
I know that Galway is a truly special place. From my tours of campus and conversations with staff and students, I have seen the extraordinary talent, creativity and opportunity we have here. In the years ahead, we will work together to ensure Galway is recognised internationally for excellence in our distinctive research areas. We will be renowned for our work in Innovation for Health; in Creativity, Culture and Society; in Sustainable and Resilient Environments - on land and in our oceans; and in Transformative Data and AI.
Through our endeavours in these and other areas of strength, we will strive for recognition in the Top 200 universities in the world, showcasing the collective talent of our university community.
We will evolve our teaching, learning and student experience to ensure our students are set up for success. We aim to break down barriers to higher education, empower our students to co-design their educational journey and deliver education that responds to the challenges, technology and opportunities of our time. We will support our students to thrive, with on-campus services and activities and through AI-enhanced digital pathways that respond to their needs.
We are proud of the positive impact University of Galway has beyond our campus. We will further develop partnerships in our city and region to improve the health, wellbeing and prosperity of our people. We will collaborate with the best minds internationally to ensure that our research and education draw upon - and contribute to - diverse knowledge, experiences and expertise worldwide.
To achieve these goals, we will design and evolve our systems and processes to make them as effective as possible. By embracing new technology, we will make it easier to work for, study in and partner with our university. We will prioritise collaboration as a collective, ensuring that all voices are heard and issues are addressed, where possible. If we can make your lives easier, and simpler, we will.
I have to say how honoured I am to be your President. I’m surrounded by wonderful staff and students, and energised by our partners’ commitment to this University.
Táim ag súil le bheith ag obair i gcomhpháirt libh agus ar bhur son chun fís na straitéise seo a bhaint amach – i dteannta agus i dtaca a chéile.

Réamhrá an Uachtaráin
A chairde, a chomhghleacaithe, a chomhpháirtithe,
Cúis áthais dom ár bplean straitéiseach go dtí 2030 a chur in bhur láthair. Leagtar amach ann an fhís atá againn d’Ollscoil na Gaillimhe sna blianta amach romhainn. Chuathas i mbun comhairliúchán cuimsitheach le mic léinn, comhaltaí foirne, comhpháirtithe agus lucht tacaíochta agus is é an plean seo toradh an chomhairliúcháin sin. Ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil leis an té a bhí ina uachtarán romham, an tOllamh Peter McHugh, as ceannasaíocht a thabhairt d’fhorbairt a leithéid de straitéis uaillmhianach dár bpobal ollscoile.
Bíodh is gur iomaí tuairim éagsúil a léiríodh le linn don straitéis seo a bheith á hullmhú, fís shoiléir atá anois á cur i láthair inti maidir lenar féidir lenár n-ollscoil a bhaint amach.
Tá a fhios agam gur áit fíorspeisialta is ea Gaillimh. Tuigim ó na cuairteanna a thug mé ar an gcampas agus ó bheith ag caint le comhaltaí foirne agus le mic léinn go bhfuil daoine cumasacha agus cruthaitheacha anseo, agus go bhfuil deiseanna iontacha le tapú. Oibrímid as lámha a chéile sna blianta atá romhainn chun a chinntiú go n-aithneofar Gaillimh go hidirnáisiúnta as a fheabhas atá ár gcuid oibre inár réimsí taighde sainiúla. Tarraingeoimid cáil orainn as a mbainfimid amach i réimse na Nuálaíochta Sláinte; i gCruthaitheacht, Cultúr agus Sochaí; i dTimpeallachtaí Inbhuanaithe agus Seasmhacha - ar muir agus ar tír; agus i Sonraí Claochlaitheacha agus Intleacht Shaorga.
Féachfaimid le haitheantas a bhaint amach mar cheann de na 200 ollscoil is fearr ar domhan trínár n-iarrachtaí sna réimsí seo agus sna réimsí láidreachta eile atá againn, agus ar an gcaoi sin tallann phobal na hOllscoile trí chéile a chur ar taispeáint.
Tabharfaimid ár dteagasc agus ár bhfoghlaim, chomh maith le heispéireas na mac léinn, chun cinn chun a chinntiú go mbeidh ár gcuid mac léinn faoi réir a bheith rathúil. Cuirimid romhainn na constaicí atá rompu siúd atá ag iarraidh rochtain a fháil ar ardoideachas a shárú, an chumhacht a thabhairt dár mic léinn a gcúrsa oideachais a chomhdhearadh agus oideachas a chur ar fáil a fhreagraíonn do dhúshláin, do theicneolaíocht agus do dheiseanna na linne. Cabhróimid lenár gcuid mac léinn bláthú trí sheirbhísí ar an gcampas agus gníomhaíochtaí a chur ar fáil dóibh, chomh maith le conairí digiteacha atá breisithe ag AI a fhreagróidh dá riachtanais.
Táimid bródúil as tionchar dearfach Ollscoil na Gaillimhe lasmuigh den champas sa phobal níos leithne. Déanfaimid tuilleadh forbartha ar chomhpháirtíochtaí sa chathair agus sa réigiún féachaint le feabhas a chur ar shláinte, folláine agus rath na ndaoine. Rachaimid i gcomhar leis na daoine is éirimiúla ar fud an domhain chun a chinntiú go dtarraingeoidh ár dtaighde agus oideachas ar eolas, eispéiris agus saineolas éagsúil ar fud an domhain, agus go gcuirfidh siad leo.
Déanaimid ár gcórais agus próisis a dhearadh agus a fhorbairt le go mbeidh siad chomh héifeachtach agus is féidir féachaint leis na spriocanna sin a bhaint amach. Glacaimid le teicneolaíocht nua chun é a dhéanamh níos éasca oibriú san ollscoil, dul i mbun staidéir inti agus comhpháirtíochtaí a bhunú léi Tabharfaimid tús áite le chéile don chomhoibriú agus cinnteoimid go dtabharfar éisteacht do chách agus aghaidh ar gach saincheist, nuair is féidir. Má tá sé ar ár gcumas an saol a dhéanamh níos éasca agus níos simplí daoibh, déanfaimid sin.
Caithfidh mé a rá gur mór an onóir dom a bheith i m’Uachtarán. Tá comhaltaí foirne agus mic léinn iontacha mórthimpeall orm, agus údar spreagtha dom is ea a thiomanta is atá ár gcomhpháirtithe don Ollscoil seo.
Táim ag súil le bheith ag obair i gcomhpháirt libh agus ar bhur son chun fís na straitéise seo a bhaint amach – i dteannta agus i dtaca a chéile.
