Saeede Mokhtarzade, PhD researcher at the Irish Centre for Human Rights and member of the BILQIS project, participated in the international and interdisciplinary summer school “State, Religion, and Family Law in Comparative Perspective” at the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study.

Summer school Saeede 2

The summer school brought together early-career researchers working across law, political science, anthropology, history and religious studies to examine the relationship between state law, religious norms and family law in comparative perspective. Participants explored how these fields shape one another across different legal and social contexts, including societies that understand themselves as secular as well as Muslim-majority contexts in the MENA region.

A central part of the programme was the discussion of participants’ own research projects. Saeede had the opportunity to present key questions from her PhD research and receive feedback from leading scholars and fellow researchers working on related themes. The programme also included a visit to the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg.
