Dr. Róisín Mulgrew presented her research on prisoner deaths at the 30th Council of Europe Conference of Directors of Prison and Probation Services in Kraków on 24th September 2025.

With Professor Philippa Tomczak, she co-presented their prisonDEATH project’s findings and recommendations at the Conference workshop on the ‘Promotion of positive health and trauma informed care’.

Their presentation was entitled ‘Improving prisoner death statistics to promote positive health and trauma informed care’.

This draws on findings and recommendations from their collaborative research project prisonDEATH including open access articles on prisoner death data, and the factors causing prisoner deaths and a policy brief ‘Improving prisoner death statistics’ on the topic.

This collaborative project has also supported the development of three policy briefs with Penal Reform International –  Deaths in Prison; Investigating Deaths in Prison and a guide for detention monitors.
