PhD researcher Salvador Leyva Morelos Zaragoza has published his latest article, Short-term enforced disappearances: (in)visible within the Inter-American human rights system, in the journal of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights.

The article examines how short-term enforced disappearances have been addressed by various international human rights bodies. It traces how the United Nations Working Group on Enforced Disappearances has developed the concept of short-term disappearances since 1980 and identifies cases within the Inter-American system that fit this category but have not been formally recognized as such. Leyva argues that acknowledging these cases represents an opportunity for the Inter-American system to advance the recognition of this form of disappearance in line with evolving international standards.

This publication forms part of Leyva’s doctoral research project, Strategic Enhancement of the International Law on Enforced Disappearances, supervised by Dr. Roisin Mulgrew and Dr. Edel Hughes.
