Project - Colourisation Using Artificial Intelligence

This research focuses on improving the quality of media restored through the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.  Some Examples include Image Colourisation, Video Colourisation, Image Super-Resolution, Video Super-Resolution and Video Frames Per Second Boosting

Manually restoring old and damaged content is a slow and difficult task requiring years of experience. This project intends to make this prosses easier and more accessible. Some of the main issues that currently exist in this area are flicker, poor quality resolution, and low frames per second.

Biography & Research Interests

Waseem Shariff is originally from Bengaluru, India and he received his Bachelors degree in ‘Computer Science and Engineering’ from the Nagarjuna College of Engineering and Technology (Bengaluru, India), in 2019. Further he completed his Masters degree in ‘Computer Science specializing in Artificial Intelligence’ from the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG, Ireland), in 2020. His thesis work included working on “Synthetic Face ID” and related computer vision technologies.

Waseem is currently working as a Research Assistant on HELIAUS Project (thermal vision augmented awareness). His research interests include machine learning utilizing deep neural networks for computer vision applications, such as working with visible, synthetic, thermal, depth data and biosensors.

Research Activities

Waseem is working on Heliaus project funded by the EU programme ECSEL. He is focused on development of smart thermal perception systems. He contributed on building a novel C3I large-scale thermal automotive dataset, comprising of > 35,000 distinct frames. He also works on developing pipeline that uses YOLO-v5 trained on thermal data to detect roadside objects. Further to optimize the trained networks to deploy on GPU and edge platforms for on board computer testing.
Waseem is also a data acquisition expert who is involved in gathering data for Driver Monitoring System (DMS) with multimodal camera sensors and biosensors.
Waseem is currently researching on using multi-modal camera sensors to estimate facial depth.

Biography & Research Interest

Mehdi Sefidgar Dilmaghani is second year PhD student working in the field of computer vision. Mehdi started his work on signals since his Master’s studies when his main focus was on signal and image processing. Mehdi has studied both of his BSc and MSc in Iranian universities in the field of Electronics Engineering and because of the emphasize on mathematical courses in Iranian universities for engineering students he got skills in circuit design and math at the same time. To be able to combine both of these skills he chose electronic implementation of signal processing algorithms as his main field of interest. His BSc project was a simple voice detector and his MSc thesis was based on second generation of wavelets.

Research Activities

My main focus is Smart Augmentation and GAN based methods. These methods and their outputs are of great importance for two main reasons:
They tackle the problem of data shortage in data thirsty networks.
Since these data are fake, GDPR and other limiting issues can not prevent their usage in different applications.
I started with writing two different networks in PyTorch (one classifier and one autoencoder), then I was trying to make those two networks to work in pipeline mode together and there were some challenges in that phase, however it was a very important step because I will have to do the same job after I finished the smart augmentation and switched to the GANs. Currently my main focus is to optimize this hybrid networks and get better results compared to the previous work done in our group. In the next level I will start my works with GANs, and the experience of this level will be helpful in the whole process.
