Dr Eugene Farrell was an invited speaker at the annual Irish Planning Institute conference on 11th April 2025. The conference, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the IPI, was attended was hundreds of planners Ireland-wide and a unique opportunity to highlight key areas where planners and planning structures can support climate adaptation strategies to build resilience within coastal communities.
The key message is that planning in Ireland needs:

  • increased resourcing within local authority climate and biodiversity offices,
  • brave, principld leadership to support new planning projects and build trust with communities, and
  • better enforcement of unauthorized developments (e.g., quarries) that are destroying the environment.
