Biography

Marie Mahon is a Senior Lecturer in Human Geography. She teaches on local development (undergraduate) and on aspects of rural sustainability (postgraduate).   Marie’s research interests focus on  urban-rural change and development and on more specific processes of change in rural communities. She was most recently part of the Galway consortium of the EU- funded Framework 7 project, ‘Developing Europe’s Rural Regions in the Era of Globalisation’. She is currently PI of the Horizon 2020-funded IMAJINE project (Integrated Mechanisms for Addressing Spatial Justice and Territorial Inequalities in Europe (2017-2021).  Her research has also been funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. She has published on urban-rural relationships and development, including the nature of civic engagement and governance, place-based identity and  representations of rurality. She is interested in the governance of spatial planning and has also published on same. She has also published on the role of the arts and culture in rural sustainability.  Marie is a member of the Centre for Environment, Development and Sustainability at the Whitaker Institute, NUIG (Creative, Liveable and Sustainable Communities Research Cluster; Centre for Environment, Development and Sustainability), and the Ryan Institute (Sustainable Rural Systems Special Interest Group).

Research Interests

Marie's research interests focus on urban-rural change and development, and on issues of rural sustainability.  Her research has been funded externally by the EU, by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences, by the Ruralia Institute, University of Helsinki, Finland, and internally by the Millennium Fund. She was most recently part of the Galway consortium of the EU- funded Framework 7 project, ‘Developing Europe’s Rural Regions in the Era of Globalisation’. She is currently PI of the Horizon 2020-funded IMAJINE project (Integrated Mechanisms for Addressing Spatial Justice and Territorial Inequalities in Europe, 2017-2021). She has published on urban-rural relationships and development, including the nature of civic engagement and governance, place-based identity and meaning and representations of rurality in fringe locations. She has also published on the governance of spatial planning, particularly issues of spatial justice and participatory democracy.  Recent research has focused on the importance of the arts and culture for rural sustainability and quality of life. Marie is a member of the Centre for Environment, Development and Sustainability,  and the Creative, Liveable and Sustainable Communities Research Cluster, at the Whitaker Institute, NUIG.
