Ireland has the richest written remains of all of Western Europe for the early centuries of the Middle Ages, and the study of medieval Irish language and literature is exciting and rewarding, and essential for a proper understanding of Irish and European history and society.

Old and Middle Irish, and Celtic Studies, have been taught at Galway since the University was founded in 1849.  Today, these fields may be studied at NUI Galway in a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Modules in Old and Middle Irish language and literature are taught through the medium of Irish within the BA in Gaeilge

Modules in Old and Middle Irish language and literature are taught through the medium of English within the BA in Celtic Civilisation.

Modules in Welsh language and literature are offered within the BA in Celtic Civilisation.

Visit of Prof. Westley Follett (Univ. of Southern Mississipi)

Prof. Westley Follett (Univ. of Southern Mississipi), author of Céli Dé in Ireland, is currently researching the lost library of the Mac Aodhagáin scholars of Ormond and elsewhere. He gave a talk on this work at NUI Galway in mid-April 2015, and on the Céli Dé at the Roscrea Spring Conference (11-12 April). His visit is supported by the Moore Institute, and Old and Middle Irish.
