Biography

Cornelia is a Professor at the School of Education. Cornelia's teaching and research combines industry-inspired practices with computing and digital technologies to create engaging learning experiences, understand human learning and knowledge transfer to facilitate behavioural change in a variety of contexts (Learning Engineering Research Group)

Prof Connolly was awarded the President's Award for Teaching Excellence (2023) and the College of Arts, Social Science and Celtic Studies Teaching Excellence Award (2023). She was also awarded the University of Galway Team Award for Research (2022), the National Lero Director Prize for Research (2021), and a Deans Award in recognition for her leadership at international, national and university level of Computer Science Education (2020).

Cornelia is a Fellow and Member of the Executive of the International Society for Design and Development in Education (ISDDE), a Funded Investigator of Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Research Centre for Software, and a Senior Researcher with the UNESCO Child & Family Research Centre.

Invited to give keynote lectures in the USA and Europe, Cornelia has achieved significant funding success with awards from Horizon 2020, SFI and industry. She has published extensively in leading international journals and a member of a number of international editorial boards. Cornelia was a Visiting Fellow at Yale University for 2023.

In addition to a Ph.D. in pedagogical innovation, she holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in Computer Engineering and Masters in Engineering (Hons) by research in telecommunications and wireless networking, and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). Her prior experience in industry, as a computer engineer and management consultant informs her research. Cornelia co-founded and was Director of a University spin-out company, which developed a national portal for higher education providers.

Research:
As her publication record demonstrates her research is multi-disciplinary by nature, drawing from related disciplines of education, computing and technology.
Prof Connolly is Principal Investigator on a variety of research projects such as the SFI Funded CodePlus and Rethink Ireland funded Bridging Worlds - Learning Spaces for New Times

Teaching:
Prof Connolly was Programme Director (Education) for the BA Mathematics and Education programme, the concurrent specialist Mathematics and Applied Mathematics teacher education degree. She designed, led and implemented the BA Education (Computer Science and Mathematical Studies) programme, the first teacher education programme for Computer Science education in Ireland. Prof Connolly teaches on both programmes, as well as the Postgraduate Masters in Education (PME).

Research Interests

Cornelia's teaching and research combines industry-inspired practices with computing and digital technologies to create engaging learning experiences, understand human learning and knowledge transfer to facilitate behavioural change in a variety of contexts.
