Overview

The Ultrasound Guided Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation (PIVC) micro-credential is an innovative professional development opportunity offered by the School of Nursing and Midwifery at the University of Galway. This Level 9 postgraduate program (5 ECTS) equips healthcare professionals with advanced skills in one of the most common clinical procedures, using cutting-edge ultrasound and vessel locating technology to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold a Level 8 Honours Bachelor Degree.
  • Applicants must already possess training in venepuncture and peripheral intravenous cannulation.
  • Letter of Support from your Director of Nursing or Midwifery or Senior Manager.
  • Can secure a letter of support from their clinical setting confirming access to an appropriate clinical mentor.

What you will Learn

On successful completion of this module the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the different vascular access types and recognise the rationale for the use of Peripheral Intravenous Cannulations (PIVCs).
  • Identify the complications that can arise due to PIVCs and explain strategies to reduce complications.
  • Demonstrate the use of ultrasound, and other available vessel locating technologies, by classifying limb anatomy and justify choice of vessel.
  • Demonstrate and evaluate procedural fluency in inserting PIVCs (using ultrasound) in a simulated environment.
  • Compare and analyse evidence-based standards of practice for PIVCs e.g. device planning/decision-making, contemporary insertion approaches, and post insertion care and maintenance.

Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this micro-credential, you will receive credits as per the European Credit and Transfer System. These credits are recognised by the awarding institution as credits aligned to learning completed at postgraduate level 9.
