With 36 years of experience in Irish education, Gerry Reilly spent the last 16 years as Guidance Counsellor at St. Macartan’s College, Monaghan, before moving into full-time leadership of the profession.

His journey with the Institute of Guidance Counsellors (IGC) has included serving as Chairperson of the North East Branch, Vice President and President-elect, before taking up his current role as Secretary-General. In this seconded executive position, he supports the President, National Executive and members nationwide.

Gerry believes that guidance counselling plays a vital role at the intersection of personal, academic and career development, helping young people find their own pathways, regardless of their background or circumstances. This commitment has shaped his career and continues to inform his leadership of the IGC.

Working alongside IGC President Valerie Fitzpatrick, he is focused on delivering the platform presented to members, with priorities including professional identity, professional standards, continuing professional development, mentoring for newly qualified colleagues, evidence-based practice and greater recognition for the profession.

Gerry welcomes opportunities to connect with colleagues in guidance counselling, education policy and careers services, both in Ireland and internationally.
